Introduction of spiral separator

Spiral separator, or spiral chute (FRP spiral chute) especially used for alluvial/ placer mining on the seashore, riverside, sand beaches, and streams. A spiral chute is a device that combines the characteristics of a spiral concentrator, a shaker table, and a centrifugal concentrator. It is the best gravity separation equipment for placer ore mining and beneficiation. Highly efficient recovery of fine-grained heavy minerals; a single device can complete roughing-scavenging-concentrate separation with low energy consumption. The FRP spiral chute is used to separate fine-grained all-metal and non-metallic minerals with sufficient specific gravity difference. The sorting process is stable and easy to control; the allowable range of feed concentration is wide, and the enrichment and recovery rate are high.

Highlights & & Selling Points:

  • Zero-energy operation: No motor required; relies solely on gravity, resulting in extremely low processing costs of ore.
  • Corrosion and wear-resistant FRP: Integrally molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) construction offers resistance to acid and alkali corrosion and ensures a long service life.
  • Compact footprint, high throughput: Vertical structure; single-unit processing capacity ranges from 0.15 to 10 t/h.
  • Maintenance-free design: No moving parts, resulting in a near-zero failure rate.
  • Eco-friendly and pollution-free: Purely physical separation process; no chemical reagents added.

Core function of spiral separator

  • Ferrous Metal Sorting: Used for the roughing and gangue rejection of fine-grained iron, ilmenite, and chromite ores, significantly reducing downstream grinding and beneficiation costs.
  • Non-ferrous Metal Recovery: Suitable for gravity separation circuits processing tungsten, tin, and tantalum-niobium ores, delivering stable recovery rates and high concentrate grades.
  • Coastal Placer Mineral Beneficiation: Processes coastal placer deposits such as zircon, rutile, and monazite, offering excellent results in roughing and gangue rejection.
  • Tailings Retreatment: Recovers residual valuable metals from legacy tailings ponds, turning waste into a resource and enhancing the mine’s overall economic performance.
  • Alluvial Gold Pre-concentration: Used for the roughing of riverbed and coastal placer gold, effectively rejecting large amounts of gangue at an early stage.

3 materials type for Spiral Separator

Comparison of 3 materials for spiral chutes: Fiberglass (FRP) Vs. PU Vs. ABS engineering plastic

1. FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) Spiral Separator

Offers the lowest price and extremely strong resistance to acid and alkali corrosion. Based on mature technology, it is currently the most popular gravity separator for mineral processing of gold, copper, manganese, chrome, tantalum-niobium, tungsten-tin, and coltan ores. However, FRP spiral chutes have a rough surface, moderate separation precision, and a brittle nature prone to cracking, resulting in a lifespan of only 3–5 years. It is suitable for high-hardness and high-density mineral separation?projects with tight budgets or for coarse, medium, fine size ore (0.02-2mm) or roughing/tailings rejection operations; however, frequent replacements mean the long-term total cost is not actually low.

2. ABS Spiral Separator

Lightest weight, smooth surface, and high separation precision. It is impact-resistant and corrosion-resistant, with a lifespan of 5–10 years. Moderately priced, ABS spiral chute is suitable for standard applications such as primary equipment for finer-size ore (0.03-0.2mm) in small-to-medium beach sand mining, short-term projects in non-corrosive environments, or the handling of lightweight minerals with very low hardness and low specific gravity.

3. PU (Polyurethane) Spiral Separator

Offers superior wear resistance and a lifespan of 10–20 years; it withstands impacts from coarse particles and rarely requires chute replacement. Although the unit price is the highest, it is the most cost-effective option in the long run. Pu spiral chutes are ideal for large-scale processing plants requiring long-term continuous operation, processing highly abrasive ores, or for overseas projects.

principle & structure of Spiral separator

working principle

The spiral chute mainly uses the inertial centrifugal force generated by the minerals of different densities in the spiral rotation to achieve the separation of light and heavy minerals. Because of its simple equipment structure, low power consumption, and large processing capacity, it is widely used in the gravity separation process. Chute beneficiation belongs to the bevel flow separation process. The slurry is given to a certainly inclined chute. Under the impetus of water flow, the ore particles are loose and layered. The upper layer of light minerals is quickly discharged from the tank, and the lower layer of heavy minerals is retained in the tank or discharged from the lower part at a low speed. After that, concentrate and tailings are obtained.

Structural features

  • Spiral Trough: The main body consists of multiple spiral grooves lined with wear-resistant materials (such as fiberglass(FRP), ABS, or polyurethane).
  • Feeder: Located at the top, it evenly distributes the slurry into the spiral trough.
  • Flushing Water System: Adjustable water flow controls the width of the separation belt.
  • Cutter: A circular discharge chute with three outlets: concentrate, middlings, and tailings.
  • Central Column: A steel structural column that secures the entire machine and ensures concentricity and verticality.
  • Support: A welded steel structure with adjustable inclination to accommodate different ore types.
